The Specification & Building Code Manager is responsible for writing specifications for new contract construction which focuses on working with architects, developers, owners, and general contractors. This entails deciding which of Best’s projects are appropriate for the construction drawings being bid on. The position also administers classes for new employees and customers to familiarize them with the Architectural Hardware Institute and the Architectural Institute of America. The incumbent is required to participate in industry related conventions by staffing the company booth.
This position reports directly to the Director of Architectural Services. This position will work closely with the Construction Sales Representatives, architects, builders, and sub-contractors. A team of Specification Writers report directly to this position
Manage and oversee team of specification writers by providing standardized processes to maximize personnel efficiencies.
Establish and build dormakaba brand recognition and specifying preferences with the architectural design community.
Provide direction and oversight based on goals from management regarding specifications to team of specification writers.
Ability to create Division 087100 specs, including door hardware sets, preambles, door index, catalog cuts, elevation drawings, and operational descriptions.
Understanding of additional Division 8, 10, and 11 specifications, including but not limited to, All-Glass Entrances and Storefronts, Automatic Entrances, Revolving Door Entrances, All-Glass Storefronts, Glass Partitions, Operable Partitions, Pedestrian Gates and Turnstiles, and Access Control products.
Responsible for building strong business to business relationships with architectural firms based on expertise in Division 8, 10, and 11 product knowledge and specifications.
Administers classes for employees and customers to familiarize them with the sections they write specifications for and work contained
Responsible for ensuring that all specifications meet relevant national building codes, fire life safety codes, ADA, laws and
Prepares supporting documentation to specification to be presented to
Assists in development of training programs and AIA/CES accredited programs to architects, employees and
Provides analysis on product comparisons and application
Electronic access control application assistance and Provide and/or coordinate elevation, operational description, riser, and wiring diagrams for electronic hardware.
Conducts reviews of shop drawings of distributor
Work closely with team to ensure that team achieves the monthly, quarterly and annual
Establish periodic goals and objectives, understand how they will be measured, receive feedback from manager and work towards achieving these agreed upon results within the stated time
Develops annual strategies, tactics, and contingency plans, to increase specific market share
Responsible for ensuring that all specifications meet relevant national building codes, fire life safety codes, ADA, laws and standards
Responsible for generating standard spec guides and design standards for specification team
Actively involved in professional industry associations. Stays abreast of industry/territory knowledge and trends. Adapts to change in the marketplace
Must be able to make sales calls to customer sites in person
Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds
Must be able to verbally communicate via telephone
Must be able to use public transportation for business travel
Must be able to manipulate a computer keyboard
Must have good vision with the ability to adjust to focus, with or without correction
Knowledge of the security and architectural business/industry required, with new construction knowledge helpful
Knowledge of all dormakaba brands of products preferred
Proven knowledge of NFPA 101, Life Safety, NFPA 80, Fire Doors and Frames, NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, UBC code book, BOCA code book, SBC code book, IBCO, IBC, NFPA 5000, and all ADA compliance regulations
Must possess complete knowledge of Builder’s Hardware, Glass, Automatics, Revolving, and Turnstiles openings
Working knowledge of Electronic Access Control, Surveillance and Intrusion systems and specifications
Excellent organization and time management skills required
Skilled in teaching, training, and mentoring new or less experienced sales staff
Must possess excellent interpersonal skills
Skilled with personal computers, including electronic E-mail, personal scheduling, word processing and electronic spreadsheets.
Comsense experience preferred.
